Twitter announces the end of Vine

Video app Vine is shutting down, Twitter has announced.

The Vine app was launched in 2013, and has been a prevalent platform for video ever since. However, Twitter announced late last week that it now plans to shut down the mobile app.

Although no specific reason has been given by Twitter for the closure, it doesn't really come as a huge surprise, given the improved capabilities of social media platforms for video. In fact, Twitter itself has rapidly boosted its own livestreaming offering, as well as improving video for users.

For people that still enjoy Vine, or have uploaded their own videos to the platform, there's no need panic, as Twitter has confirmed that the website will remain online for the time being. Vines can be accessed and downloaded, and users can still browse and view the many videos.

An end date for the app has yet to be confirmed, but the latest information can be found on Vine's blog and Twitter account.
